Berg’s heartfelt Violin Concerto is dedicated ‘to the memory of an angel’. It mourns the passing of 18-year-old Manon Gropius, the daughter of Alma Mahler, a central figure on the musical landscape of the early 20th century. Christian Tetzlaff will give us an emotionally vivid interpretation of the piece. … but all shall be well is an affecting meditation in remembrance of Adès’ grandfather. This piece from a British musical phenomenon is paired with a work from a giant of British music – Elgar’s First Symphony. Originally intended to commemorate a military hero, General Gordon, it was premiered by the Hallé in 1908. Full of unforgettable melodies, the final result radiates tenderness and elation.
