Five Must-See Plays on Tour This Autumn

From murder mysteries and psychological thrillers to family conflict, legendary romance and a courtroom classic, autumn 2026 is shaping up to be a particularly strong season for drama on the road. Artspod picks five productions to look out for as they tour the UK.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Mark Haddon’s bestselling novel returns to the stage in a brand-new production of Simon Stephens’ acclaimed adaptation, directed by Ned Bennett.

At the centre of the story is Chris Boone, whose brilliant mathematical mind is far easier to navigate than the unpredictability of other people. When a neighbour’s dog is found dead, Chris sets out to discover what happened. But the investigation soon uncovers secrets much closer to home, taking Chris on an unexpected journey through family, trust and independence.

The new production stars Charlie Brooks and Joe McFadden as Chris’s parents, Judy and Ed. Its autumn tour opens in Brighton on 29 September, with visits including Milton Keynes, Nottingham, Leicester, York, Liverpool, Wimbledon and Bath before the tour continues into 2027.

The Silence of the Lambs

One of the best-known psychological thrillers makes its world stage-play premiere in 2026.

Based on Thomas Harris’s novel and adapted for the stage by Gina Gionfriddo, the play follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she seeks the help of imprisoned psychiatrist and murderer Dr Hannibal Lecter in the hunt for serial killer Buffalo Bill. But as Clarice tries to unlock Lecter’s brilliant mind, he has questions of his own. The production is directed by Nikolai Foster.

John Partridge takes on the role of Hannibal Lecter, with Mollie Gallagher as Clarice Starling. Following its summer premiere, the autumn leg visits Edinburgh, Nottingham, Milton Keynes, Salford, Bradford, Oxford, Peterborough, Hull, Belfast and Dublin, before further dates in 2027.

August Wilson’s Fences

August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama receives a major new production directed by Daniel Bailey.

Set in 1950s Pittsburgh, Fences centres on Troy Maxson, a former baseball player whose ambitions were frustrated by the racial barriers of his time. Now working as a refuse collector and trying to provide for his family, Troy’s disappointments and decisions increasingly affect his wife Rose and those closest to him.

This new staging stars Ray Fearon and Madeline Appiah and explores family, responsibility, lost opportunity and the pursuit of the American Dream. The production tours from 11 September to 14 November, travelling to Leeds, Oxford, London, Manchester and Nottingham.

Tristan & Yseult

More than two decades after it was first created, Emma Rice’s original Kneehigh production of Tristan & Yseult is back.

First performed in Cornwall in 2003, the production transforms the ancient tale of forbidden love through a mixture of live music, movement, comedy and theatrical invention. It was last seen on stage in 2017 and returns to the UK for the first time in almost a decade.

The 2026 revival begins at Theatre Royal Bath before travelling to Mold, Glasgow, Guildford and Edinburgh between 11 September and 24 October. After a November run in New York, further UK dates follow in 2027.

Expect a love story that is funny, anarchic and ultimately heartbreaking — and a welcome opportunity to see one of the productions that helped establish Emma Rice’s distinctive theatrical style.

Twelve Angry Men

A hot jury room, twelve men and the life of a young defendant resting on a single verdict.

Reginald Rose’s classic courtroom drama begins with what appears to be a straightforward murder case. But when one juror questions the evidence, certainty starts to unravel. As the debate intensifies, prejudices, assumptions and personal conflicts emerge around the jury table.

The returning West End production stars Gray O’Brien, Bill Ward, Ricky Norwood, Tristan Gemmill and Ben Nealon. Its autumn tour visits Windsor and Aberdeen before continuing to Birmingham, Guildford, Darlington, High Wycombe, Cheltenham and Bradford, with further dates scheduled for spring 2027.
