Michael Sheen. Live On Stage.
MICHAEL SHEEN. LIVE ON STAGE.
From a powerful new Welsh historical drama to one of theatre’s greatest classics, Michael Sheen takes centre stage in two major productions across Cardiff and London’s West End.
Welsh actor Michael Sheen is preparing for a remarkable return to the stage, taking on two very different roles in Owain & Henry and Amadeus.
First, he steps into the shoes of one of Wales’ most legendary historical figures, Owain Glyndŵr, in a brand-new play by Gary Owen. Then, in spring 2027, he returns to Peter Shaffer’s acclaimed Amadeus, playing the tormented composer Antonio Salieri opposite Callum Scott Howells as Mozart.
Both productions are presented by Welsh National Theatre, where Sheen serves as Artistic Director, marking an exciting period for the company and for Welsh theatre.
OWAIN & HENRY
5–28 November 2026 | Donald Gordon Theatre, Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff
A new historical epic from Olivier Award-winning playwright Gary Owen (Iphigenia in Splott), Owain & Henry brings a defining chapter of Welsh history to the stage.
Set in 1400, the story follows Owain Glyndŵr, a Welsh nobleman declared an outlaw by King Henry IV. Refusing to accept his fate, Owain leads a rebellion that threatens the English crown and ignites a struggle for Welsh independence.
As the uprising gathers momentum, the two leaders find themselves locked in a battle for power, identity and the future of a nation.
Michael Sheen takes the title role of Owain Glyndŵr, alongside Linus Roache as King Henry IV, with Rakie Ayola and Sophie Melville also joining the cast.
Co-directed by Sheen and Steffan Donnelly, this ambitious production promises a sweeping theatrical exploration of loyalty, leadership and rebellion.
A co-production between Wales Millennium Centre and Welsh National Theatre, Owain & Henry runs for a limited season in Cardiff this November.

AMADEUS
9–27 March 2027 | New Theatre, Cardiff
17 April – 7 August 2027 | Noël Coward Theatre, London
From medieval rebellion to musical genius, Michael Sheen returns to the stage in Peter Shaffer’s celebrated drama Amadeus, directed by Jeremy Herrin.
Set in Vienna, the play explores the bitter rivalry between Antonio Salieri, an established court composer, and the brilliant but unpredictable Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Salieri has worked tirelessly to achieve success and recognition. But when he encounters Mozart’s extraordinary musical talent, admiration soon turns to jealousy.
Convinced that Mozart possesses a divine gift denied to him, Salieri becomes consumed by resentment, setting out to destroy the young composer whose genius he cannot match.
Michael Sheen stars as Salieri opposite fellow Welsh actor Callum Scott Howells (It’s a Sin, Cabaret) as Mozart.
The production marks a particularly significant return for Sheen, who previously played Mozart in the West End and on Broadway in the late 1990s, before taking on the role of Salieri at Sydney Opera House in 2022.
Now he returns to the character for the first major revival of Amadeus in over a decade.
Opening at Cardiff’s New Theatre in March 2027, the production will transfer to London’s Noël Coward Theatre for a 16-week West End season.
The production is a collaboration between Welsh National Theatre and Second Half Productions, marking an important milestone as the Welsh company brings its work to the West End.
