Edward Gardner Conducts John Adams’ Harmonielehre
CBSO
Town Hall & Symphony Hall Birmingham
Fri 17 July 2026
7.30pm
Join us at the home of the CBSO for an informal afternoon performance, programmed and introduced by CBSO musicians. These concerts give audiences the chance to get closer to the music and experience the artistry of our orchestra members in an intimate setting.
In a programme which celebrates scale, ambition and sheer sonic impact, the CBSO is joined by an exceptional cohort of young musicians as part of the first CBSO Orchestral Residency scheme. Following a week-long residency, led by conductor Edward Gardner, the 130-strong ensemble will perform three landmark pieces which have redefined orchestral mass and momentum: Varèse’s Ionisation and Amériques unleash explosive colours and boundary‑pushing energy, while Adams’s Harmonielehre offers sweeping rhythmic drive and luminous, modern‑Romantic power. Together, these works showcase the brilliance of a huge orchestra in full flight, and the exciting new talent shaping its future.
I’m thrilled to be reconnecting with the CBSO – we have a wonderful, rich, shared history. The young musicians will have played many mainstream works in their colleges and youth orchestras, but to tackle this extraordinary programme together will fill us all with a sense of ambition and pride.
